An Introduction from Conference Chairman Michael Rubenstein
Dear Colleague,
Hot Issues in Employment Law has become one of the real highlights of the conference calendar, and I hope you will agree that this year’s event looks like being one of the best ever.
Often imitated but never matched, our unique format of 11 sessions per day delivered by a collection of employment law luminaries, represents tremendous value for money.
This year the new legislation day (25 September) will be focusing on
the changes brought about by the Employment Bill and the Pensions Bill currently going through Parliament, the controversial 2008 Sex Discrimination Act regulations, the single Equality Bill to be introduced in the next Parliamentary session, and proposed legislation on flexible working and time off. We will also look at the recent changes to the law on employing immigrants, and at how TUPE 2006 is being interpreted.
The key case law day (26 September) brings together the cream of the employment law bar, including no less than seven QCs, to explain the practical significance of the leading decisions over the past year. Issues to be explored include employment status, whistleblowing, equal pay and religious discrimination, collective redundancy consultation, implied contractual terms relating to trust and confidence and fiduciary duties, and changing express contractual terms. Other sessions will look at the latest cases on the statutory dismissals and grievance procedures, decisions interpreting the Protection from Harassment Act, and the impact of recent EC J judgments on freedom of establishment and freedom to provide services.
I will be chairing both days, and I look forward very much to welcoming you.
Best wishes,
Michael Rubenstein
