Civil Actions Against The Police

Defending individual rights by bringing effective actions against the police

Introduction

Claims against the police are notoriously difficult. With criminal prosecutions against officers highly unlikely and the remedies available through the police complaints system in question, often the only remedy is recourse to the civil courts in a claim for damages.

Despite the increase in actions against the police, substantiated independent investigations are nominal in comparison, particularly in the case of discriminatory behaviour and assault.

This important conference will explore this rapidly changing area of law. Chaired by Fiona Murphy of Bhatt Murphy, the conference will cover a number of specialist subject areas. You will receive practical advice on how to bring a successful claim for damages and hear the defendant perspective from Police Sergeant Nick Westwood of the Civil Actions Investigation Unit of the Directorate of Professional Standards (MPS).
