What will you gain from this conference?

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme which came into effect in April 2010 is a mandatory carbon trading scheme for large non-energy intensive businesses and public sector organisations. The scheme has undergone significant change from its original form but retains its core purpose to provide a stronger incentive for the implementation of carbon reduction measures by participants, underpinned by an audited carbon reporting process with transparency of performance via published league tables.

2011 includes the first reporting of emissions by participants in July which will determine their league table ranking, expected to be published in the autumn. Participants will need to have maintained a compliant data management system and evidence pack to avoid any penalties.

Participants will need to prepare for the purchase of fixed price allowances from April 2012 and develop strategies for ongoing emissions reduction and future allowance trading.

The incentive to reduce energy consumption in commercial buildings will require tenants and landlords to find solutions to work together. For example, a landlord must decide whether it wants to pass CRC costs to its tenants, and if tenants are not party to the scheme they may have no inducement to reduce their energy consumption. This timely one day conference will explore the implications of the Government’s simplification review, and many other practical issues that the CRC raises for commercial property, and offer potential solutions for owners and occupiers to achieve CRC compliance at least cost.
